Crohn’s Can Lead To Anemia

Dr. Donohue recently answered a question at The Herald Tribune regarding the onset of anemia in Crohn’s disease…

A part of his reply was…

“Anemia is all but expected in Crohn’s disease. It’s partly from the loss of blood in the bloody stools and partly from malabsorption of vitamins and minerals, particularly iron. Also, it’s a consequence of many chronic illnesses.”

This is a problem that I am also dealing with personally given the amount of blood I lost the last few months. Also, after having 20cm of my illium removed, my doctor says that I may find it harder to absorb iron.

We’re going to monitor my iron levels (they are low) and see what we can do to get them back up - I’ll keep you posted.
